Finding Your Life Purpose

You know that feeling when you’re truly enjoying yourself fully and lose track of the time? When you completely forget about your to-do list and all those things you constantly stress about? When you feel free and high on life? When you’re truly living in the present moment, the flow of life.

Re-read that, pause and pay attention to where your mind takes you while reading those first few lines.

What makes you lose track of time? What makes you feel alive?

Whatever came to your mind first is connected to your life purpose. In those moments, you are being your true self. My wish for every one of you reading this is to find your passion in life. Your passions lead you down the path of finding your life purpose. Some of you may already know what your passions are and some of you don’t. Either way is fine-everyone is on their own, unique timeline.

I’ve done two exercises that have helped to clarify my life purpose so I wanted to share these with all of you to try…

1st grab a pen and paper

Exercise #1:

Write down a list of things that make you happy. Let the pen and your mind go into a flow state. Do not overthink the list at all, just begin writing and write down whatever comes to your mind.

Write as many things as you want, there are no rules to how short or long the list has to be or what kinds of things to write down. It can be your partner, children, pets, career, beaches, yoga, mountains, music, helping others, sports, money, the gym etc this is just for yourself to reflect on afterwards.

Notice which things bring an automatic smile to your face as you are writing.

After you’ve completed your list, go back through and write the reason you think that specific thing makes you happy next to each item. For example, does the beach make you happy because it’s so calming? Do you enjoy helping others because it makes you feel needed and important? Does TV make you happy because you can escape your life for a bit?

The reasons and emotions behind your passions and interests are SO important. Save this list and re-read it when you feel lost in life, because this list is a peak into your soul. A peak into what sets your soul on fire, what makes you feel alive.

Reflect on this list and think of different jobs you can do with the things you wrote down.

If you are working in a job that has nothing to do with anything you wrote down, reflect on that as well.

Exercise #2:

Keep that pen and paper handy because I am going to have you write a 2nd list.

I think this exercise is so beneficial to do at least one time in your life.

Begin writing down a list of things you would regret NOT doing before you die.

When I did this exercise, I actually envisioned myself being told I only had a few more hours on Earth. Then I began writing down everything I had regret not doing up until that very moment – one of which was starting a Blog (true story!) which ignited me to actually start this blog that same week.

Yes, this exercise can sound a little grim, but this list will be so powerful for you. It will show you what your heart and soul really cherish in life, your passions, important relationships etc.

Try not to overthink this list either, just let it flow and write down whatever starts coming to your mind. Maybe it’s wishing you spent more time with your family, wrote that book you always wanted to write, started that business, apologized to someone, told someone how much you loved them etc.

Once you are finished, REFLECT.

The beautiful thing about this exercise is you can actually do EVERYTHING on your list. It’s not your last day on Earth. You hopefully have the time to do it all, but you may not. That is the reality we all face. Don’t let yourself be the person who carries all of these regrets to your death bed. Be the person who goes after your dreams, no matter how big they are. Be the person who fails 99 times and succeeds on the 100th time. Be the person who inspires others to follow their dreams and goals. Be the person you were put on this Earth to be. STOP BEING AFRAID OF WHAT OTHERS THINK and just do whatever makes your soul happy. Go skydiving if that’s been on your bucket list for years, travel, face your fears, let yourself get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Spend time with your loved ones! They are so important and will not always be around, so cherish your time with them! Make that phone call, text the people you love and tell them you love them-often! We let shame and fear block our own happiness for no reason. It doesn’t have to be that way. You can actually live the life you want. Get out of your own way and make it happen so you have no regrets later.
