Is Dairy Making You Fat?

Dairy is one of the most disgusting foods we can possibly put into our body.  It’s nice to forget about what’s really in your glass of milk because it tastes so good.  AND we’ve been conditioned to think that milk is good for us for calcium and healthy bones.

Note: I’m not a nutritionist and i’m not being payed to say anything by anyone. I’m simply someone who has read dozens and dozens of intensive research studies, books, and also attended the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. So, with that in mind, let’s continue.

Tell me this: If milk is so good for our bones, why do the countries that consume the most dairy products suffer from the most cases of osteoporosis?  Well, among many other things, there is a study that shows that the unique composition of cow’s milk increases the amount of calcium that is being excreted in urine.  Remember, we are drinking a COW’S MILK. Not human milk. Our bodies are incredibly smart, but don’t really know how to assimilate another species milk.  That is why so many of us are lactose intolerant, and suffer from bloating, weight gain, indigestion, acid reflux, etc.

Let’s dive into that, shall we? Why are we drinking something that is used to make baby calfs grow into a full, 600-1000+ pound cow? Last time I checked I am neither a cow, nor looking to gain a thousand pounds.  We don’t drink human milk past birth, and cows don’t drink their milk past birth either.  It’s said we started drinking milk as a last resort for survival if we were to experience severe famine.  Note: Milk was considered high-fat and high-calorie enough to sustain us during famine. We are hardly in a famine today.

If you’ve heard the facts that “three glasses of milk per day can aid in weight loss!” check out where the study is from. THE DAIRY COUNCIL! Haha, hahaha, haha.  And how did the weight loss occur? In conjunction with calorie restriction 😉

Oh, the Dairy Council, you almost caught me there.

But it’s not just the Dairy Council – it’s every government-influenced food industry that operates today.  The Meat and Dairy industry are completely run by the government, and if you read books such as “The China Study,” “In Defense of Food,” or “The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World” you will dive into much greater detail on the topic than i’ll go into right now. It would take me a year to write this post if I put in all the shocking and disturbing information i’ve learned about how our food system is run.

The short story of that is this: The studies you’ve seen that promote meat and dairy for good health are from government-influenced, economically-driven viewpoints with studies that are hardly considered reliable.  It’s a bunch of BS, really.  Even the food pyramid is dictated by the government and what they need to sell more of to profit their industries. It has nothing to do with optimal health, or we would be doing much better as a country.

But that’s not all! Dairy contains IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor-1) which is connected through many thorough studies to tumor growth! That’s enough to make me drop the carton of milk.  Not only that, but dairy is especially awful for women because of all the added hormones, estrogen and growth factors that can affect our menstrual cycle, puberty, and menopause.  For all humans, the added antibiotics in milk and growth factors are detrimental to our health.

Did you know that in countries with low to no dairy consumption, breast cancer is so rare that it is nearly nonexistent? Interesting.

I’d also like to point out that a lot of this information comes from “The China Study” by Colin T. Campbell who actually started the study trying to prove that we should be eating MORE meat and dairy! After just a few years into his research, he realized the total opposite, and that is where the largest nutrition study came from 🙂

So last but certainly not least, is the torture of the cows for dairy. If anything, the dairy industry is the most cruel and ruthless.  I know how easy it is to think that these animals are simply roaming the fields all day, then milked, but that couldn’t be further from the case.  If you watch documentaries (such as Earthlings), I can guarantee you will rethink your excessive milk habit.

The mother is artificially inseminated (the cows actually go to the “rape rack” as it is called) and forced to carry a baby. When the baby is born, if it is a boy, it is considered useless and sent to be chained up for 6 months until it is slaughtered for veal.  If you eat dairy, you are also helping the veal industry.

If the baby is a girl, it is immediately taken away from it’s mother which is as traumatic for the mother cow as it would be if your own baby was taken away. They scream, try to get free, and go into depression after their babies are taken away.  The mother cow is shot up with hormones that make her udders 10-20x larger than they should be naturally after birth, and squeezed by a machine that causes bleeding and infection.  This is why there are antibiotics in milk: to treat the disease that the dairy industry causes to the cows.  Normally cows live to be 20-25 years old, but in this setting, they only live about 2-7 years. That is how taxing and horrible their lives are.  When they are “used up,” they are sent to slaughter.  (Information taken from “The Kind Diet” by Alicia Silverstone.)

I don’t know about you, but that breaks my heart. It’s easy to depersonalize and not think about the innocent lives of others being taken for our advantage. It’s easy to think of them as machines without personalities.  But to me, these cows each had a personality, a life worthy of living. I know most people won’t agree, but this is simply how I feel.  When I see animals at a farm, they are all special and cute and precious lives that I would never think of taking. If I can’t even stand to watch the footage of dairy farms, how can I consume it?

Now – you might be angry. You might be pissed. Maybe you’re mad at me for writing this or maybe you’re mad at the way our country and food system is run.  Either way, I hope you take something from this. Maybe you’ll think twice before buying milk and switch to something like soy milk or almond milk (both have tons of calcium!)  Maybe you’ll research vegan sources of calcium and protein.  Maybe you’ll read the books I talked about and watch a few documentaries to form your own opinion.  You don’t have to go 100% off dairy to make a difference.

I myself have not eliminated dairy 100%, but I do plan to be extremely cautious about it and eliminate it as much as I can right now. It’s easy to forget about all these facts when you’re in front of a pretty ice cream display, but this time I don’t want to forget. WE are the change we wish to see in this world 🙂
