Katie’s ‘Must Have’ Every Day Beauty Products

Usually my posts are about finding yourself, being One with the Universe, and meditation/yoga… but today, I’m doing something totally different.  I mentioned in one of my earlier posts that I absolutely love makeup. It’s one of those things that I use to express myself, release energy, and it really does calm me down.  My getting ready time is “me time.”

Lately i’ve been getting tons of people asking questions on what I products I use and how I do my makeup, so I decided…why not just share my MUST HAVES with all of you?! Here we go!

1. Primer/Base

For some people this step is unnecessary, but if you have oily skin or want a look that lasts all night long, you’ve got to try out the Benefit “Stay Flawless 15-Hour Primer.” This stuff keeps your foundation glued to your skin all day long.

2.  Foundation
My all-time favorites are (in order of how much I love them): Makeup For Ever “Mat Velvet+” Foundation, MAC “Studio Fix” Foundation, & Smashbox “Liquid Halo” Foundation.

This foundation is a little pricey (~$36), but I believe it’s one of the best ones out there for flawlessly smooth & luxurious looking skin.  This is my favorite for achieving that matte look of perfect skin.

Right now i’m using MAC Studio Fix Foundation.  I love this formula because it really does give full coverage. One layer provides medium, and just a little bit more provides full coverage.  This foundation is awesome for days when you want a little bit ‘more’ makeup.  I also found that when I started using this foundation, people kept asking how I got my skin to look ‘so good.’  Thank you, MAC 😀 That’s the secret! (~$27)

The Smashbox brand is incredibly cool because the makeup line started from the Smashbox Studio for photography in LA.  After shooting all day, the artists wanted makeup that would last and look incredible in photos.  Today Smashbox leads in HD makeup and primers. The Smashbox Liquid Halo foundation is great for every day wear.  Made for HD, this foundation blends into skin perfectly, leaving you glowing and luminous.  Sometimes I mix the Studio Fix by MAC & this foundation for a really glowy, full-coverage foundation look.  I also love that you can build this foundation to be sheer coverage, medium, and full coverage. (~$42)

3. Powder

I have two favorite powders that have my heart right now:

“Hello Flawless” by Benefit is a long-lasting, imperfection-hiding warrior in the powder world. I think this is my all-time favorite, although it’s a little pricey (~34).  It’s impossible to beat the, well, flawless coverage of this powder.

My new stand-by in my makeup arsenal is this beautiful MAC Studio Fix powder.  The powder also can work as a foundation which means less time in front of the mirror on those days when you’re in a rush.  I love that there’s some extra coverage in this powder which is something I really look for in mine.  It also keeps me oil-free all day long which is a big bonus! (~$27)

4. Eyebrows

Obviously I am a brunette, so I have only had experience with what looks best on me as a dark brunette. Through all the crazy color changes and shades of brown i’ve put my hair through, the “Cocoa Star” (top right) in this palette is my go-to for filling in brows.  It’s totally matte with absolutely zero shimmer. If you don’t want to buy the full palette, look for a dark brown MATTE eyeshadow to fill in using a brow brush. (~$36)

The brush I use for eyebrows is this one by Eco Tools.  Super cheap and available at the drug store.

5. Eyeshadow

Although I have a million different eyeshadow palettes because I am a little too excited by makeup, you really only need one good palette in your makeup drawer.  If you have to choose just one, these two are the best for creating the biggest variety of looks and getting the most for your money.

The famous Urban Decay Naked 2 palette. Filled with matte & shimmer colors, neutral and deep/cool tones, there’s enough variety to create tons of different looks.  Both a day and night palette, i’m sure you’ll find yourself reaching for this each and every day.  Well worth the money, as higher end eyeshadows have much stronger pigmentation. (~$52)

I worked my butt off to find this Lorac Cosmetics Pro Palette.  For good reason this palette is selling out everywhere and is pretty hard to get your hands on.  However, it’s worth the trouble of finding it.  With 8 matte shades and 8 shimmer shades, there’s a perfect shadow in here for every occassion.  I also am in love with how pigmented the colors are.  The best is that it comes with neutral shades, pretty pinks, sultry browns, and a few INCREDIBLY beautiful and very unexpected colors such as “Gold,” “Garnet,” “Deep Purple,” and “Sable.”  Garnet has become one of my new favorite shadows of all time. (~$42)

6. Bronzer & Blush

Drumroll please for the best bronzer i’ve ever used! I’ve been using it for about 2 years now and don’t see any reason to change any time soon.

I’m not the kind of girl who likes a super shimmery face, so for the longest time I struggled to find a totally matte bronzer.  Then this Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer popped into my life.  The best part?  IT SMELLS LIKE CHOCOLATE.  I’ve even had someone tell me it tastes like chocolate (don’t ask).  While I can’t vouch for the second part, I can vouch for the fact that you will not regret buying this bronzer.  Whether you want an all-over sun-kissed glow or a matte bronzer for a perfect contour, this is the one for you. (~30)

Although I haven’t found many blushes that I get excited over, this is one of them:

Lorac Baked Matte Satin Blush. (~24)  Gorgeous sheen and pigmentation, these blushes definitely feel high-end.  They don’t look chalky, but instead give you a “glow from within” look.  I have the shade “Exposed” which is peachy and coral-y and really girly. I’m in love!

7. Lips

Gorgeous lips pull everything together – from a day time look to a super dark smokey eye, the right color is important.

MAC Lipglass colors are amazing.  Yes – they are kind of sticky, but that doesn’t keep me from loving them.  Their color and shine is unbeatable.  The one above is shown in the shade ‘Nude’ and is the one that I have owned for quite some time.  I wear it alone or with other colors and it always looks amazing. (~15)

A dark red, wine colored lipstick like this one from Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick line (color shown is ‘Raisin Rage’) (~$5)

I have never gotten more compliments on my lip color than when I started wearing MAC’s Creme Cup’ Lipstick. (~16)

I wear this during the day, at night with dark smokey eyes, or really any time at all.  It’s the perfect nudey pink to complete your look. It also looks good on a huge variety of skin tones which is rare 🙂 Creme cup looks especially amazing paired with the MAC ‘Nude’ Lipglass.

8. Last but not least … Cleansing!

Derma E products are made from all natural ingredients and can be found at your local health food store.  This is the particular kind I used, although the brand has many other lines of cleansers that do things such as Hydrate, Tone, Refine, etc.  I noticed a huge difference in my skin when I began using this stuff regularly!  I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a change in skincare routine.

Look up the ingredients and what they do – they’re all natural and it’s cool to see how they work 😀

I hope you enjoyed getting a peak into my makeup bag! If you’d like to see more on how I use some of these products and how I apply them, I made a makeup tutorial as requested a few months ago. Let me know if you’d like to see another one, I loved making it!

Remember – spending an extra 5~10 minutes in the morning to get ready can make you feel confident and beautiful the rest of the day.  When we feel beautiful, we act differently, and that’s the great thing about taking time for yourself. ❤
