I want you to envision these two scenarios. Take a deep breath and close your eyes. Feel fully into all the emotions in the situation.
Scenario A: The alarm goes off for the third time. You can’t peel your eyes open, and when you do, you notice deep dark bags underneath your eyes. Your mood is less than stellar and you dread all the things you have to do that day. Life is hard.
Scenario B: You wake up naturally and listen to the birds chirping outside your window. This morning you wake up with a smile on your face, ready to greet the day. You sleepily rise up knowing there’s a day full of fun and adventure ahead.
It’s no secret which scenario describes the majority of people today. In fact, my mornings used to look a lot like Scenario A, too.
How can you makeover your mornings?
Here’s an outline of a typical morning for me. With the wonderful help of Monique Richards, I have learned the importance of creating a morning routine that grounds me, balances me, and starts my day off with a deep sense of peace. When things get hard or stressful later in the day, I can call upon that sense of peace to handle those situations with ease.
1. Take 5!
Before I get out of bed, I set a timer and sit for five minutes. I breathe, connect back with my body, and check in with my mood and energy. For the next hour, I don’t check my phone. I give myself plenty of time before I need to get moving out of the house so that I can savor my mornings.
Before anything goes into my bod, I purify and cleanse a bit by making myself warm water with fresh lemon juice. If you’d like to read about the many benefits, check that out here 🙂
From there, I make my Green Smoothie. The options and resources regarding green smoothies are endless. My favorite right now includes kale, spinach, banana, peach, chia seeds, and coconut oil. This gives me stable energy and craving control for the rest of the day (no joke! It is the miracle meal. More on that later!)
3. “I bless this food, I bless my body, I bless what this food can do for my body.” – Heather Waxman.
This is a beautiful prayer to say before you dive into breakfast. I always ask that there be love and healing in my food, so that my body may receive the nutrients and energy from the food i’m eating.
4. Shhhhhhh… 🙂
If you’re new to meditation, try out five minutes at first. Even that might seem like a lot, but the more you practice, the easier (and more fun) it will get. I take 10 or 20 minutes in the morning to sit in silence, wash away my thoughts, and connect to the loving part of myself I wish to live from.
I love reading inspirational books, usually about spirituality, in the morning. Right now I am reading “The Daily Om” by Madisyn Taylor as well as “Your Sacred Self: Making the Decision to Be Free” by Wayne W. Dyer. These little bits of wisdom inspire me to live the blissful life I aim to live.
Having a morning routine is a beautiful thing. It provides the space we need to be our best each and every day, no matter what the circumstances are. At first it may feel awkward or strange, but in time, you will grow to love this practice. Remember: You don’t have to do it all at once. Taking even one piece of this plan and making it your own is an amazing step 🙂
I would love to hear from you! What is your morning routine like? What brings you peace and serenity in the morning?
